The HORSES HELPING HEROES Project,
located at a private facility in Smithfield,
Virginia, is a non-profit, 501(c)(3)
organization dedicated to providing
equine-assisted activities and therapies for
military and first responder veterans who
have special needs and disabilities.
Situated on acres of beautiful woods and
pastures, the facility offers the ideal location
for participants to experience the therapeutic
benefits of our equine friends. We are a
PATH International (Professional Association
of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International)
member center and bring together a team of
skilled horses, PATH-certified instructors,
and a group of dedicated, fully-trained local
volunteers to teach veterans the foundations
of horseback riding, horsemanship and
equine behavior. We provide an opportunity
for veterans to work extensively with an
assigned horse over the course of a 4 to 6
week session. Lunch is served at each class
which provides an opportunity for participants
to socialize with other veterans and our
wonderful volunteers.
All of our services are provided at NO COST
to the veteran.
Proudly serving military and first-responder veterans
with special needs and disabilities
NEWS ABOUT US
On December 16, 2011, the Horses Helping Heroes Project received the First Lady’s Initiatives Team Effort (FLITE) award and was
inducted into the Opportunity Hall of Fame along with the other member centers of the Virginia Horses for Heroes team. In addition to our
Certificate of Recognition, we shared the $2000 award monies with our fellow team members. Being recognized “for exemplary efforts in
providing equine therapy to wounded military and veterans” by Virginia's First Lady Maureen McDonnell was a true honor for our group
of 2 and 4-legged volunteers at the HHHP.
